KTM Map Identify Feature – Configurable Identify Distance per Zoom Level

Overview

KorTerra.net and the Field app now support configurable settings for controlling the Identify inquiry distance—the search radius used by the Identify tool when selecting a point on the map. Previously fixed at a 25-foot radius (50-foot diameter), this distance can now be configured to improve accuracy at different zoom levels.

Understanding the Identify Functionality

The Identify functionality in KorTerra (accessed via the "i" button on the map) allows users to retrieve detailed information about map features within a specified radius. Details typically include:

  • Layer ID and Layer Name: Information about the map layer where the feature resides.

  • Attributes: Other properties of the feature such as size, material, and pressure.

Configurable Identify Distance by Zoom Level

Customers can now have different Identify distance settings for various zoom levels. This allows for a larger Identify radius when zoomed out and a smaller radius when zoomed in, enhancing precision in asset identification at higher (closest) zoom levels.

  • Adjustable for the Five Highest (Closest) Zoom Levels: You can configure the Identify distance for the five highest zoom levels of your maximum map zoom setting.

  • Default for Lower Zoom Levels: All lower zoom levels will default to the distance set for the 5th highest zoom level, as the total number of zoom levels varies based on the maximum zoom setting.

Recommended Configuration

For customers with the Facility Mapping functionality, it is recommended to set your maximum zoom level to 24. Next, you can then configure the Identify distance for zoom levels 24, 23, 22, 21, and 20. The distance set for zoom level 20 will apply to all lower zoom levels (1–19). A best practice configuration might be:

  • Zoom Level 24: 1-foot radius

  • Zoom Level 23: 2-foot radius

  • Zoom Level 22: 3-foot radius

  • Zoom Level 21: 8-foot radius

  • Zoom Level 20 and Below: 15-foot radius

Visual Representation on the Map

When using the Identify tool, a red circle now appears around the selected point on the map. This circle visually displays the Identify radius and encircles the assets included in the selection.

  

Prerequisites 

  • KorTerra login credentials 

  • KorTerra system administrator access (Note: Customer administrators cannot modify this setting) 

 

Availability 

The configurable identify distance per zoom level is available to all customers using KorTerra.net and the Field app (Field App - Identify Distance per Zoom Level documentation can be found here). Configuration changes must be made by a KorTerra system administrator. Contact KorTerra Support to request these changes.

  

Instructions for KorTerra System Administrators 

  1. Log in to KorTerra.net

  2. Navigate to Maintenance > Customer Settings

  3. Select the Mapping tab.

  4. Scroll down to the IdentifyDistancesForZoomLevels section.

  5. Adjust the values for the following fields:

    • Identify1HighestZoom

    • Identify2HighestZoom

    • Identify3HighestZoom

    • Identify4HighestZoom

    • Identify5HighestZoom

      • Reminder: The setting for the 5th highest zoom will apply to all lower zoom levels as well.

Notes

  • The minimum identify radius is 1 foot (2-foot diameter).

  • If adjusting both the map max zoom and the identify distance, modify the map max zoom first. Then adjust the identify distance to align with the new zoom settings. This approach ensures you can test the identify distance with the desired maximum zoom already configured. If the map max zoom changes, the identify distance will apply to the new 5 highest zoom levels.
